Description
Garmin POI (Points of Interest) files contain location and informational data that can be queried on most Garmin handheld and automotive units. POI’s are essentially databases containing much more information than an ordinary waypoint. For example: a list of surveyed fish species in each Montana lake can be compiled which can then be queried and viewed on your Garmin GPS.
To load the Garmin POI files included in the free download (link at bottom of page) simply create a folder named “POI” inside the “garmin” folder on your micro sD card or unit’s internal memory. Then place the POI files with a .gpi extension inside this folder.
Once you have the .gpi files in the POI folder fire up your GPS and use the “Find” or “Where To” functions to access and query the “Custom POI” or “Extra’s”. The POI icons will also be visible on the map screen and you can select the icons to view the associated data.
The download link below contains four POI files:
- Fish 2020 Lakes – Select icon on the map or search lakes by name to view a list of species known to inhabit the lake. Contains species data for 2,342 lakes in Montana.
- FWP Fishing Access 2020 – Select icon on the map or search sites by name to view boat launch, hunting, and camping information for each fishing access site.
- Abandoned Mines – Select icon on the map or search mines by name to view what minerals were reported being found.
- Lewis & Clark Camps – Select icon on the map or search by date/name to view the date and whether or not Lewis, Clark, or both used the site to camp.
More POI databases will be added to this download over time as new, exciting, and helpful data is identified. Enjoy!
