NEW for 2014!
Elk Habitat Model v1.2 is a transparent overlay that depicts areas of 15-30% slopes that occur within forest cover patches of 30 acres or more. Only areas where elk occur in Montana are included. Basemap topo and landowner information is not included but can be purchased separately. The Elk Habitat Model overlay is bundled in our Hunting & Fishing Combo package.
This habitat preference model is derived from 10 meter DEM and LADESC Landcover Database information to bring you the first elk habitat preference model for Garmin GPS. We’ve read as many regional studies on elk habitat preference as we could find in order to assess what we could provide given currently available data. What we found is that elk prefer sloped terrain between 15%-30% and forest cover patch sizes of 30 acres or more. Whether you’re a novice hunter or a seasoned veteran of elk country, this habitat model will allow you to see elk country in a way you never could before now.
More variables in the future? We wanted to grade the forest patches based on road density but realized we would have to assess and map all closed and open roads on all lands to determine the road density variable with any accuracy. That task is a very tall order statewide and efforts are currently underway to assess this data and use it to update next years elk habitat preference model. For now you can make your own assessment of road density based on your own knowledge or using maps showing roads and travel routes.
